I have often wished for a book about parenting an extrovert when you are an introvert. From day one my extrovert challenged me in ways I never expected. She makes friends wherever she goes, has never met a stranger, and seeks out new experiences in situations that I would have avoided or been fearful of at her age. Hettie Brittz new parenting book Growing Kids with Character, is all about Christian parenting with your child’s natural tendencies in mind.
Her book describes 4 different personality types, using tree metaphors, and gives practical ideas of how to encourage your child to develop their natural strengths and both understand and meet their needs. These types are not intended so much to label or limit a child, but to help us identify and anticipate our children’s needs that may be far removed from our own. Brittz would argue that most people are a mixture of multiple types of “trees.”
I really liked that the book helped me see our differences not so much as a problem or barrier between me and my children, but as their God-given given makeup, a special design and plan for our family, where I have a part to play in their road to maturity and development, while God is also transforming me through parenting. I really appreciated the way she processed her own childhood so that she could parent not from a reactionary mentality, but from a place of wholeness.
