Have we got a bedtime book to share with you! By now you probably know how much we love silly books at our house, and the super funny new release Penguin and Tiny Shrimp Don’t Do Bedtime from author Cate Berry and illustrator Charles Santoso is a HUGE hit around here. We are so grateful to Harpercollins for gifting us a review copy.
This isn’t your typical bedtime story. Your kiddo will be pleased to find out there are no sleepy sheep to count or wishing stars. No big soft beds, and NOBODY is tired in this book. AT ALL. Nope. Because Penguin and Tiny Shrimp don’t do bedtime. Instead the daring duo leads a bedtime resistance movement off on many adventures. They fly in a hot air balloon, swing on jungle vines, cross the Serengeti and shark infested waters, all the while acquiring a caravan of animal friends along the way. One of which, you will be delighted to know, is a UNI-HIPPO – Bonnie and Margaret’s FAVORITE part! (#squadgoals) Building on the book’s ironic narrative, you might have guessed that this animal crew gets pretty tired after all their world traveling, and action packed adventures. The last page shows them all finally fast asleep after all.
Santoso’s illustrations are brilliant and Tiny Shrimp and Penguin are endearing, enduring characters because of their silly antics and witty banter (which plays out in speech bubbles in the illustrations). Also Tiny Shrimp’s tiny shrimp shoes on one page make me laugh literally every time we read it. I really hope we see these two, and maybe even the uni-hippo again in another book! Go check out this hilarious new read aloud that is sure to stay in heavy rotation at bedtime. You can even pick up a copy from our local indie bookstore, Starline Books here.
